Digital Literacy week 10 workbook

SCHOOL OF ART
VISUAL ARTS CORE STUDIO 1 – DIGITAL LITERACY
DIGITAL LITERACY WORKBOOK

Rachel Gillies 2009 Otago Polytechnic
WEEK 10 OVERVIEW
Lecture: Intro to the Project: ‘Presence’ Workshop: Getting your Project Started
Presence Project The aim of the project is to develop an online ‘presence’ for yourself that will inform someone about you as an artist and your current art practice. For example, you might upload the following:

a current CV

an image of yourself

images of your work

a statement on your philosophies as an artist

links to other websites/artists/videos/images you like, or other blogs

This may take the shape of a website, or a blog and you should choose the most relevant to your abilities.
If you choose to use a blog, you should start a NEW Blog just for this project, while maintaining your original digi lit blog with your weekly posts/course exercises. You will submit both at the end of the course (10th June).

Your presentation will consist of you talking to your online ‘presence’ in front of your group. The documentation (i.e. the website) and in your oral presentation, you should ensure that you are showing you have completed all learning outcomes for this course. Presentations should be 5mins and will be given on 10th June (Week 15) You should be working on this project between now and then.

*You should post the answers to these questions on your blog, but there is some space below for you to write answers here too, if you want to work both on paper and digitally.

Name three different ways that you might like to use to develop an ‘online presence’,
and give a brief description of each.

The next step is to set up your own online presence. Write down the URL here, and make a link to it in one of your blog posts.

Start thinking about content:
What are you going to put into your ‘online presence’? Do you already have these things? If not, what do you need to do to gather them? (e.g. make some scans of some of your artworks, write a personal statement, etc.)
Make a list here of things you need to get to put on your ‘online presence’.
Over the next few weeks of this paper you will be required to gather these things together and upload them to your web presence. Your online presence should showcase your digital abilities as much as possible, and you will be expected to present your online presence, demonstrating you have been able to meet the learning outcomes for this course.
Reminder of the Learning Outcomes:
Learning Outcomes
At the successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
1
Safely use digital hardware.
2
Recognise a variety of software programmes and identify their use.
3
Show evidence of attendance at the lecture series.
4
Demonstrate an ability to use relevant digital tools that support different areas of study.
5
Demonstrate an understanding of the wider context of digital technologies.
6
Begin to apply digital skills in research and in areas where this is relevant for the contextualisation and making of visual art.
7
Have some understanding of issues around intellectual property.
8

WEEK 9 OVERVIEW

Your guest lecturer for this week will be Leigh Blackall Lecture: Free Software Workshop: More Blogging: uploading images, uploading video.

Self‐Directed: Write a post to your blog about FREE SOFTWARE as you understand it and list at least 5 software programmes and their functions. Find a video that discusses, showcases, or demonstrates the use of FREE SOFTWARE and upload this to your blog, with a short introduction. Upload to your blog a copy of all the images you have saved so far.
This week’s tasks should all be done in your blog which will act as your workbook for this week.
You may also like to use the space below to record some of the tasks before you post them to your blog.

What is FREE SOFTWARE? is software that can be used, studied, and modified without restriction, and which can be copied and redistributed in modified or unmodified form either without restriction, or with minimal restrictions only to ensure that further recipients can also do these things and that manufacturers of consumer-facing hardware allow user modifications to their hardware. Free software is available gratis (free of charge) in most cases.

5 x software programmes that are free and a quick description of each:
Wordpress : a free and open source blog publishing application
Blender : used for modeling, UV unwrapping, texturing, rigging, water simulations, skinning, animating, and creating interactive 3D applications
Open Movie Editor : video editing programme to make movies
Audacity: a digital audio editor and recording application
GIMP is a free software raster graphics editor used to process digital photographs and other graphics

Where did you find a video about Free Software? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9fqlI9B6QU

Why did you choose it?
had good ratings

Explain how you uploaded it to you blog – (e.g. what are the steps?)

How I did this, go to google, search how to download youtube videos, selected http://www.downloadyoutubevideos.com/
pasted the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9fqlI9B6QU
which provided ability to download in .flv format. Also provided imbedding html code which I pasted into bloggers html. This embeds the video in the blog.

OVERVIEW WEEK 7

Lecture: Blogging, The Internet & Global Communities

Workshop: setting up a blog(blogger or wordpress), setting up a newsreader(bloglines)

Self‐Directed: e‐mail Rachel (rachelg@tekotago.ac.nz) with your blog address and find 5 relevant blogs (to art/your study) to add to your newsreader. Once you have done this write a blog post listing your chosen blog feeds.
www.we-make-money-not-art.com
www.painterskeys.com
www.crazyauntpurl.com
www.yarnharlot.ca
angrychicken.typepad.com

Set up a blog in either Wordpress or Blogger. You can call it anything you like, but you will be asked to use it as part of your work/.submission for this paper...
What is the URL/Web Address of your blog? (i.e. what would someone else type in, to see you blog online?) Make a note of it here:
http://katiecrick.blogspot.com/

Now, please e‐mail the URL/Web address to Rachel at rachelg@tekotago.ac.nz
Next, set up a News Reader with Bloglines.

Once you have done this – add your own blog as your first ‘feed’. Have a look online at some other blogs that were either discussed in class, or that you find yourself. Add the ones you are interested in to your news reader, using the ‘add’ command/button.
Once you have them added, you can organise them into folders, or order using the ‘Edit’ command – have a go with this.
Finally, write a Post in your new blog. This post should tell the world which blogs you added to your newsreader feeds and why. ‐ You should MAKE LINKS to each of the blogs you discuss in your post. (Hint, use this button: ) ‐ You should add relevant tags/categories to your post

OVERVIEW – WEEK 6

Lecture: Time for a Presentation
Workshop: Microsoft powerpoint
Self‐Directed: Using the files you have saved so far in Digital Literacy, put together a short presentation about yourself. Feel free to add more images/text than has been done for this class. The aim of this exercise is to make the most overdone powerpoint you can – experiment with animations and transitions to your heart’s content – the silliest presentation may win a prize…

Open a new slideshow in MS Powerpoint. Have a lok at the different ‘designs’ you can use and choose one. The aim of the slideshow is to show what you have done so far in this Digital Literacy Paper.

You should add one of each of the images you have saved so far: 5 x images of digital ‘things’ 1 x scanned image of your work (the ‘online’ version) ‐consider whether each one gets a new slide, or if they can put together on one slide.
Add some text to either NEW slides, or ones with images already on them to ‘frame’ your content, and to talk about some of the other, (non0image) things you have learnt in this paper – you may want to add other images to illustrate your points.

Animations and Transitions: What is the main difference between animations and transitions? When you set transitions, you control how slides move from one another; when you add animation effects, you control how your slide objects move onto the slide.
Add at least one (and maybe more!) animation to your Powerpoint, and at least one Animation. Experiment with the range of animations and transitions.
What is slideshare.net and how can it be used? It’s an online depository for slideshows you can use it to publish your powerpoints and download others.

What file formats can be uploaded to Slideshare?

Presentations: PowerPoint - ppt, pps, pot, pptx, potx, ppsx; OpenOffice - odp, pdf; Apple Keynote - key, zip or pdf.Documents & Spreadsheets: Microsoft Office - doc, docx, rtf, xls; OpenOffice - odt, ods, pdf; iWork Pages. For anything else, saving as pdf usually works.

Save your powerpoint as a slideshow (.ppt) and as a.pdf:
(file names)
Open an account with slideshare.net and upload your slide‐show.
You may want to take note of your username and password here, and./or the URL(web address) of your slide show online.

DIGITAL LITERACY WORKBOOK

Rachel Gillies 2009 Otago Polytechnic
OVERVIEW – WEEK 5

Lecture: The Write Stuff
Workshop: Microsoft Word (2007 version)/tables/formatting/saving(esp. file formats)/converting to pdf’s

Self‐Directed: Develop a CV for yourself in a word document, using the following: at least one table, a header or a footer, two different fonts and font sizes. Consider your layout – write a paragraph (in a new word document) that ‘evaluates’ your layout design. (Feel free to make up stuff for your CV that hasn’t quite happened yet – e.g. exhibition at the Tate, London.) Save as a word document and save as a pdf.

Microsoft Word is one text editing software programme. Have a look at some of the others that were in the lecture, and name another two that you think you might use:
OPEN OFFICE AND GOOGLE NOTEBOOK

What referencing style do you need to use to hand in your School of Art written work? And where will you find information on how to reference using it? (hint – a web address:
Chicago Manual
http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/home.html

Open a new document in Microsoft Word to create your ‘CV’. This can be as real, or as made up as you want – the goal is to use the following Tools in MS Word, and to think about your Layout, so that it is easy to read. You should insert, use the following at some point in your document: ‐A table (Play around with borders – you can make borders invisible, but they will still neatly arrange your text) ‐Fonts and sizes (Good graphic design often uses more than one font and font size, usually ones that are dissimilar, for emphasis.) ‐Insert an image (this may be your own image, or one that you scanned from last week, to show off your work. Try different ways to layout your image in the document.)
SAVE this document as a.doc file and as a pdf (hint – go to the ‘Acrobat’ Tab in MS Word. Write down the names of your files here:
Open a new document in MS Word and write a short paragraph discussing and evaluating what you did in your CV – e.g. how did you use your fonts for emphasis? Was it difficult to change the borders on your table? Which layout for your image did you use, and why?

Heading font is larger and of a different font. I used square on the image to make it easier to move where I wanted it.
